During a meeting recently, one of my colleagues shared that her take away from our discussion was that “What You Focus On, Grows”.  That brought such direction and clarity to me immediately.  These five simple words can be relevant in so many situations in life.  The area of our career and job search that we focus on, is what develops the most.

WHERE IS YOUR JOB SEARCH FOCUS?

Many of our clients have had the same problem, they spend hours every day applying to jobs online, but are never contacted by the employers.  These job seekers are smart, accomplished, hard working professionals. Why are hiring managers not contacting them?  It is because their focus is on the tasks that do not bring results.  A shift in our focus brings a shift in our results.

QUALITY, NOT QUANTITY

A common misconception is that completing the job application or submitting a resume is the most important part of a job search, it is not. The follow up is by far the most important aspect.  I challenge clients to take a “quality over quantity” approach when applying to job leads.  Shift your focus from the number of applications submitted, to the number of applications that you follow up on.  If you are applying to an average of 30 job leads per week, try adjusting your average applications to 12, but for those 12, thoroughly follow up.
